Jeannette and Swen
Swen Hendrickson came to Minnesota, Pelican Rapids, as a fifteen year old boy. We don't know why he left his country of birth or his history there. Census records describe his parents both being born in Norway. His draft records describe as medium build, medium height with dark hair and blue eyes.
This record of 1900 shows a Swen Hendrickson working as Farm Laborour in Trondhjeim, Otter Tail, Minesota for Ole M Sommerness.
He must have taken a job with a farmer named Quamme after this time. It seems Mr Quamme helped Swen to go to the University of Minnesota school of Pharmacy.
Swen contracted Tuberculosis at some point after university. The time after his graduation to the time he reappears in Dunseith, North Dakota at the TB sanatorium is vague. Perhaps he was working as a pharmacist in the area nearby at the Turtle Mt Indian reservation. (Frank Phillips had worked there as an Indian Agent)
When he was released from the sanatorium he boarded in a tent at Clara Phillips boarding house. He met Jeannette Phillips there in about 1910, six years after her father Frank died.
Jeannette's mother Clara was running a boarding house and working as a seamstress to support her three children.
Swen's draft card 1918. He was then aged 34 living in Aneta with Jeannette.
We have a census from that year showing Swen living at Clara's boarding house in St John. Swen and Jeannette were married and later moved to Aneta, North Dakota. When the depression hit he and his boss/partner parted ways, Swen and Jeannette moved to Jamestown , ND where he was a pharmacist for many years. He had hoped to become a partner in that business but that didn't happen.
Census 1920 shows family living at 60 Third Steet, Ora Township, Nelson County, North Dakota.
Census Record 1930, Stutsman County, Jamestown
1930 Swen, Jeannette, their four children and lodger Anne Heck lived at 39 Third Avenue, Stutsman County, Jamestown.
To follow his dream of owning his own business, he moved his family to Wahpeton, ND where he had a pharmacy. (His granddaugher Jan Hall Brooks is not 100% sure if he owned it or worked for someone else) Janice Hall Brooks (Patricia Hendrickson Halls daughter) remembers going to that wonderful place many many times and getting ice cream sodas made by her own Grampa Swen. Jeannette was helping him with the store by managing the gift shop area.

Swen was diagnosed in 1946 with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) better known today as Lou Gehrig's disease and died in Wahpeton 1949. The Quamme family donated the burial site at Wahpeton.
